With just under 10 minutes to go, senior guard Quentin Diboundje took a ball coast-to-coast and flushed a monstrous slam to raise the Ryan Center patrons to their feet and tie the game at 55.
However, that explosive offensive play and the court-long putt made by a fan at halftime to secure a free flight served as the lone highlights from a 75-67 loss for the Rhode Island Rams, as their comeback attempt vs. George Washington fell short.
A dismal offensive first half saw Rhody down by as much as 15, and although the Rams were able to trim it to an eight point deficit before the break. Vibes were low in the Ryan Center at halftime, a theme not uncommon from the featured building in Kingston this season.
Rhode Island trailed at the half in home games against Holy Cross, Yale, Providence and George Mason earlier in the year. However, the difference is that Rhode Island ended up winning all of those games, stretching a home winning streak into the New Year.
However, the classic late game heroics were not to be found on this cold January night, as the Rams froze in the final minutes to allow the Revolutionaries to take back the game and send the Rams down to 1-2 in conference play.
Senior guard Sebastian Thomas led the Rams in scoring once again with 20, while Diboundje followed with a 14 of his own – his largest tally on the season.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they take on Richmond looking for their first true road win of the season. The game tips-off at 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast available on the Varsity Network.
