After dropping back-to-back games the week prior, Rhode Island women’s basketball showed up prepared to run the floor against VCU in their 64-50 victory Wednesday night.
The game was tied for all of 46 seconds before a layup from senior guard Sophie Phillips opened up the gates to Rhody’s first lead of the night – a lead that was never forfeited.
The Rams in Keaney outscored their mascot counterpart in each of the first three quarters, while trailing by two points in the final quarter, a trend that had seemed to be abandoned over the past few games.
Rhode Island did not win the game by stretches of pure domination. Rather, Rhody simply shot better from the field in a consistent manner to steadily grow their lead throughout the game. The Rams shot 42.6% from the field compared to a 35.8% mark from VCU.
A large proponent to the Rams’ offensive success was their senior center Harsimran Kaur, continuing her breakout season. With her 17 points on Wednesday, the big has now scored in double-digits in six consecutive games, marking comforting consistency to what was once a very poor offensive performing team.
Kaur also added nine rebounds to the box score, elevating her rebounds per game to 7.6, which ranks 8th in the Atlantic 10.
Junior guard Ines Debroise (13) and senior guard Sophie Phillips (14) also joined Kaur in double-figures.
The Rams will stay on the road for their next game, as western Pennsylvania calls the Rams to take on Duquesne on Sunday at noon. The game can be streamed on ESPN+ with a radio broadcast available on the Varsity Network.
